" LES FILS DE NICOLAS CLERC "
THE LARGEST EUROPEAN CAVALRY




Mrs Anne-Marie POROT researcher overriding dolls and toys, we recently provided an article on " Les Fils de Nicolas Clerc " you still in communication <poupendol>.

The latter, which complements perfectly the former will give you further details on this important house with the doll was not the primary objective but who had specialized in small horses. It's a double page on Settlements by Clerc found him in the magazine " Nos Jeux, Nos Jouets " ( Our toys, our games ) of March 1960 which explains the whole manufacturing cardboard horses and proves that this house still existed and flourished in 1960.



The Horse of cardboard, industrial factor ?

In 1895, Mr Nicolas Clerc based in La Plaine Saint-Denis, a family business for the small horses homemade cardboard.
Today, the family priest has been largely his company prosper. She now owns and operates a large factory, from which emerge at an accelerated pace these lovely rocking horses or roller facing large and small.


Decentralization and modernization.


Advances in technology require sophisticated equipment, intensifying the demands for ever, left the factory Clerc Plaine Saint-Denis. As part of the country's overall decentralization, she settled in the small city of Creve Coeur in the Oise.
This new plant, designed and implemented with the assistance of technicians prominent among them Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Gégoud, covers an area of 8,000 m2.


Dynamic leadership.
 

A family team dynamic presides over the firm. Mr Ferdinand Clerc, son of the founder, runs with the help of his two son, Roland Clerc, which provides business management and Guy Clerc, himself responsible for technical direction.



A program loaded.

   From April to November, the factory's working at full capacity  and work is uninterrupted 24 hours on 24.
  More than four hundred working men and women are attached to the plant, among them, 220 people are totally dedicated to the manufacture of toys, the main activity of schools Clerc.
   But they are also producers of kitchen furniture, school furniture, garden furniture, seats from different chair and stool to the chair.

Rapid progress through automation.

  At the moment (we're in 1960 ! ) , Institutions Clerc produce 500,000 horsepower molded cardboard per year. The rate of production can reach 5,000 horses per day of eight hours!
  It is not enough: a new organization of the plant, based on automation, will allow in the coming months to achieve a much faster rate while the production of horses Establishments Clerc is already the most important in Europe.

ln the foreground, the Common Market.


   The place occupied by the Settlements Clerc in the Common Market is now paramount. In terms of capabilities of intensive production, the firm has the most competitive prices of the Common Market. Selling them is open and in all countries concerned. The production will be the largest in Europe .


HOW IT MADES A LITTLE HORSE?





    How do you get this lovely little horse rolling or rocking, traditional toy that delights children still little boys ?
We shall see, following the successive stages of manufacture.


1 °  Cutting and Grinding

 The crude cardboard, only raw material used, is cut, hot stamped.
    The cardboard is then cast into molds at 230 ° working. The molding time was 2 minutes to 2 ½ minutes, depending on the skills of the worker.



2° Legs

   The legs are filled with a powder made of cardboard and agglomerated with a special glue. An iron rod built slightly exceeds what the tab is electrically welded to the cradle which receives the rollers and the rocker.



3° From trimming to " papinage "

   The horse's body parts are then trimmed, stapled, welded and then subjected to the operation known as "papinage". Operation that consists in resealed the holes remaining in the body of the horse after stapling.


4°  Finishing and painting

   The bodies of the horses are then soaked in a special paint mechanically and transported by chain to drying ovens.
   Then they are decorated with spray paint and vernis. At last, they are filled with saddles and stirrups and we add the mane and tail.
   Then, the little horse finished, painted, varnished or flocked (by projecting rayon fiber that gives the impression of tissue through an electrostatic process) will join his brothers at the store, waiting to bring joy to a toddler which will be the faithful companion !
